Mission Statement!

My art classes are not just about teaching students to draw the manga and comic characters they love, but about helping young artists develop their own narratives and illustrations from their own ideas. I try to show students several different approaches to comics, cartooning and manga, and encourage those who have already established their own styles. Ultimately, I want to help students become confident, inventive artists who will someday participate in the growing graphic novel movement and publish their own work.

The lessons in my classes are not limited to simply drawing comics, but can be applied to any challenge, artistic or otherwise, that a student may face. I push students to challenge themselves, set goals, and to work hard, but to never stop enjoying making their art. I try to keep them inspired and motivated, while they learn to become professional artists.

Over the years, many of my students have grown together and become lasting friends. They have helped each other develop both as artists and as people. My goal is to establish a community of young artists and storytellers who never lose sight of their inspiration and imagination.

Basic Info:

Classes are relatively small, ranging from 5-10 students. The Village Art classes are capped at 7, whereas the S.A.G. Studio class is capped at 15. Other classes and workshops have varying space and seating, which will be listed when they are scheduled.

Classes have no concrete curriculum, but are rather based on the individual students' needs. I assign general projects (as listed in the Projects section), and in the process help each individual student with their specific needs. I will also regularly hold demonstrations of how to use professional materials (such as art markers, screen tones, special inking pens) and give assignments allowing students to experiment with them. All art supplies for these assignments are provided by me.

Students attending regular sessions are encouraged to bring their own sketchbook and pencil. Almost all other materials are provided. Feel free to bring your own materials if you prefer.

About the teachers!

EMILY C. MARTIN

Emily C. Martin is a comic artist, fine artist, illustrator and teacher. She has been teaching the Megamoth Studio classes for 5 years, as she began in 2003 at Lisa Russel's S.A.G. Studio in Rohnert Park, California. Emily is a graduate of Sonoma State University with a B.F.A. in Printmaking. She is a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and her hobbies include gardening, table top RPG's, and watching other people play video games. Of course, she always enjoys watching cartoons and reading comics... although that has become more of a career. Emily is the auteur of the web comic, Otherkinds.
